For years, women have been fighting for equality in the world of sports—both on and off the field. Specifically in sports medicine, women have had a more difficult time breaking into the field than of other areas of medicine. In fact, women account for only 8.7% of members of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
While these numbers are low, CONMED Orthopedics made it a mission to connect and support women sports medicine physicians by creating the Advanced Women’s Knee Forum.
A Recap of the Forum
The Forum was led by (pictured left to right) Dr. Elizabeth Dennis of Mount Sinai, Dr. Laurie Hiemstra of Banff Sport Medicine, and Dr. Beth Shubin Stein of HSS. Held at the CONMED Learning Center in New York, the course offered didactic and lab sessions focused on advanced techniques in knee sports medicine.
Topics at the forum included, but were not limited to:
- ACL Graft Choice
- When to add an LET
- When to Augment Your Repair/Reconstruction
- Options/Techniques for Meniscal Repair
- Indications for MPFL Reconstruction
- Osteochondral vs Cell-Based Solutions
- Trochleoplasty Techniques
Thank you to our esteemed faculty and all who came out to attend the first Women’s Advanced Knee Forum. If you’d like to attend a future Forum, educational event, or conference, be sure to keep an eye out on upcoming CONMED events.
